rise against

Posted : 15 years ago on 4 April 2009 04:38 (A review of Pump Up the Volume)

admittedly a acquired taste. the film is a 80's classic (yes it is almost an oxymoron!)

i love it. its subversive but in a humorous way. great music and fun punk love story. just a great romp that makes me remember my youth.

weird

Posted : 15 years ago on 4 April 2009 07:24 (A review of Dagon)

ok so its not perfect, but the movie more than makes up for any faults by just being totally weird. i've watched it a couple of times and i still feel like i don't quite know what to expect from it. interesting story, great visual experience and something far from the norm of movies.

a cult movie for sure!

pulp massacre

Posted : 15 years ago on 4 April 2009 06:54 (A review of The Devil's Rejects (Unrated Widescreen Edition))

rob zombie spends a lot of effort here trying to spew as much senseless vile language as possible for no reason at all. subtlety is not his forte. thats the largest failure of this movie and its mostly tolerable.

its clear zombie is a fan of movies; this movie is a montage of all kinds of homages to the past and more recent films. the language is a clear attempt at tarintino's pulp fiction minus any style or...dare i say...class. where he plays homage in other ways, zombie is clever and capable; with the dialog however he's simply out of his league.

also, as is always a bad idea, he cast his wife as one of the lead rolls. she can't act. at best she's ok, at worst she's laughable. of course, for a horror movie this isn't a big issue all in all.

the bulk of the movie owes a lot to texas chainsaw massacre and holds it own well.

in the end, i felt more beat over the head with the constant crude language than shocked by the horror of it. it just made it difficult to care at all for these people. but everything else about the movie is well worth seeing.

good times

Like an 80's movie for the 90's with all the faults but you'll still love it!

No its not perfect, and it occasionally it seems like its going to fail as a film, but for all its faults its a hell of a lot of fun.

Laughs, awkwardness, great music, and some sappy moments. Really wish there were more films that were this enjoyable.

saw again

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 21 March 2009 06:55 (A review of Captivity (Unrated Widescreen Edition))

captivity is a "saw" clone more or less. not that its bad, it holds its own ground, its just nothing new.

an actress is abducted and held captive and subjected to sick and twisted torture. a second man appears to be a second captive and from the first moment he's on screen you know he's the bad guy. granted there is twists and turns which do make the movie interesting. and thankfully the movie abandons what, early on, seems like its going to be a critique of the vanity of film stars. there isn't a shocker ending but more of an 'its finally over' ending.

personally i dislike these types of films. they're not so much fun as they are excessively violent for no real reason. the whole premise of this kind of movie is random senseless violence that tries to outdo the moral depravity of the rest latest film. boring! maybe i prefer the occult overtones, or backwoods weirdness, or diseases, or monsters, but this hateful exploitation is just as taxing.

that said the movie accomplishes what it intents, although it doesn't really surprise nor rise to the twisted level of other movies (saw) in the same vein.

military zombies

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 20 March 2009 06:01 (A review of the supernaturals)

very 80's movie. bad acting, bad filming, and mediocre everything else. but then there's nothing really wrong with the movie. its a run of the mill 80's horror movie. if you understand that and don't mind that sort've quality, this is a decent view. nothing profound, of course.

a group of military trainees stumble across a civil war burial ground, skulls are found, the young men play around with them...zombies ensue and the killing begins.

sci-fi zombies

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 20 March 2009 05:30 (A review of Undead [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC])

i watched this movie a third of the way through before i realized i've seen it before. which is just to say that a lot of it isn't memorable, but the overall movie was good.

basic horror movie plot, lots of people turning into zombies from some sort've disease, a few trying to get out of town and away from it.

its fairly clear from the beginning that this is a comedy/parody and it does a good job being both clever and yet sufficiently gory/scary. although the over the top acting by the main "i've got the weapons because i've seen this coming" character is a bit hard to stomach. hes a wild west sort've guy which a ultra scruffy voice that doesn't suit the baby-face-with-a-beard city-boy-trying-to-look-country person. he's at least tolerable for the rest of the movie, and generally a likable character.

the group finally does make it out town, but then are stopped by a wall that surrounds the entire town. that's a shock, and it won't hurt the movie knowing this...its just an unusual turn to explain what is happening. surprising and deffinately unique.

funny, gory, scary, weird. this is deffinately worth seeing despite some flaws.

better than it looks

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 19 March 2009 11:51 (A review of Cabin Fever)

everything about this movie reeks of bad, and its not at all. when i got this dvd i thought i was in for some really cheesy bad, straight to video no budget horror slop. in fact its a fairly slick filmed movie with unknown actors who are actually good.

the plot is basic fair: a group of kids go out to a cabin for partying, a stranger appears, and everything starts getting bloody from there. the stranger has some sort of disease and before you know it so does everyone else. in the meantime everyone is trying to help or get out of the situation which is bloodier than most films and quite gruesome.

you do feel for these people enough to find it queasy rather than funny. and there's enough suspense to keep you watching.

all in all its a kind've under the radar gem that i've watched several times and enjoyed it each time.

bad but good

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 19 March 2009 11:04 (A review of Basket Case (20th Anniversary Special Edition))

admittedly an acquired taste but i enjoyed this movie. maybe its the dank times square hotel, or matter of fact filming. there's nothing particularly special here, but it is a weird and twisted story with cheesy but entertaining gore.

definitely some poor acting, some of the worst in fact. its like the filmmakers showed up and asked anyone to read the parts. what you end up with is over-the-top trying to act.

the plot has Siamese twin brothers who were separated while in their teens. the deformed 'parasite' half is separated from the 'normal' brother and its discarded as unwanted. but it survives and has a psychic link with the other brother (for some really awful scenes, the normal brother talks to the voice in his head; what you hear is a one sided poorly acted conversation. yuck). the deformed brother convinces the normal brother to help him take revenge on those who performed the 'in-home surgery'. so the normal brother takes him to New York and carries him around in a basket. (Whats in the basket? Its my brother!!!) he stays in a hotel in times square with some odd characters hanging about. and precedes to track down and kill the people involved (actually one is killed at the beginning, its just the 2 others). a few unlucky others get in the way and killed as well. not always how you expect, nor who you expect.

the rest is pretty obvious; there's a love story which the deformed brother dislikes, there's drunkenness, there's murder, and a lot of attempts at suspense (which never really are, but nothing to bad). the ending was unexpected and fairly nicely done.

this review doesn't sound very glowing. it won't be your favorite movie. you may even hate it. i thought it was entertaining and reasonably good. just don't expect greatness.
