modern warfare

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 1 March 2009 03:33 (A review of Jarhead (Widescreen Edition))

i'm not a fan of war movies. this is something different. its all about the buildup to the war and then....well you'll just have to see.
ultimately its a great drama about a group of soldiers in iraq having to work together.
beware if you're buying this that there's a lot of fullscreen versions out there and this should be seen in widescrene.

also worth picking up the soundtrack, its ambient droning greatness. one of my favorite soundtracks.

killer and child

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 10:18 (A review of Leon: The Professional (Uncut International Version))

an assassin finds a family unwillingly in an orphaned girl who wants to be just like him. she may struggling just to survive and he may end up wanting better for her. whatever the case, its an unusual father daughter relationship that tears at your heart strings as much as it pumps your blood with action. great blending of genres.

great acting, great action, great story. prefect movie.

unexpected gem

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 10:12 (A review of King of California [HD DVD])

interesting. i had no idea what this film was before i watched it. i had no way of expecting what i was in for.

about a girl whose father was a mental patient and comes back to live with her. she feels left out by his lack of care for her when she was a child and is conflicted about caring for him now.
he begins to have fantasies about riches buried beneath a store and she believes he's losing his mind again. the bulk of the story is about their challenged relationship and her coming to terms with loving him and accepting the beauty in his fantasies.

charming and motivating. is it worse to pursue a dream or settle for the normal?

loose

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:58 (A review of Lost in Translation)

this is a loose washing film about transient moments. if you're looking for clear defined drama look elsewhere. if you want a moment of possibilities this film is full and rich.

really i think this is highly based off of wong kar wai's chungking express and fallen angels series. those are two of my favorite films so this although less complex is a mood piece that i enjoyed a lot. somewhat better than the seemingly identical (less foreign setting) "broken flowers" which i'd add to the list as similar movies.

lovely

old

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:52 (A review of Lust for Life)

old style drama. almost seems like a religious production. it has way over the top acting. still its a good story. its a kind've saturday morning drama that you'll watch and enjoy but won't be crazy about.

see it, probably not buy it unless you collect films about artists like i do

excellence

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:41 (A review of Ping Pong (2002))

a movie about ping pong? worse a movie about ping pong based on a japanese graphic novel? it sounds at best questionable. honestly it sounds dull and boring. in fact, its far from it. its one of the best dramas you're likely to see.

about 2 boys (actually 3, the third comes into the story later) who grew up playing ping pong and became extremely good at it. one has the potential but is a lost soul, one has the potential but allows the other to take the limelight, and the third (the later character) has the motivation but not the potential.
yes there is good (actually interesting) ping pong action, but most of this story is about childhood friends and the meaning and pitfalls of talent and potential.

amazing must see drama. forget the subject, its merely a background, the story is sublime.

yes

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:34 (A review of Basquiat)

probably not for everyone. i give it a 10 because i love it. no its not really perfect.

drugs, sex, and art. graffiti, NY, and a love story.

a drama worth watching with interesting characters (which may be more like performance theater versions of the real people than documentary, but who cares its a movie).

about a street artist that becomes a sensation in the 80's NY art scene. and then the inevitable decline. brought on by both the questions raised by the artists fame, the need to continue to outdo oneself, and a damning prevalence of drugs and money. what could have been, killed by those who claimed they loved it...

great soundtrack in the movie and david bowie is andy warhol!!!

wow

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:20 (A review of Across the Universe (Two-Disc Special Edition))

surprisingly good, occasionally surreal.
not 100% perfect but entirely entertaining. what really makes this movie worthwhile are the songs. what an awful idea it seems to redo beatles songs, and i like many people had huge reservations about the film because of it. i'm not a huge beatles fan but i do like their songs and redo-ing them seems wrong. however, they're great. even my father who grew up at the time when the beatles were a part of life thinks these versions are better than the originals. thats saying something...they really pulled it off. die hard beatles fans may be put off, the rest of us enjoyed it.

some of the surreal parts are startling and unexpected but quite psychodelic and fun.

style galore

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:05 (A review of 30 Days of Night)

a creepy movie. suspenseful and beautiful.
i loved this movie. it has style and drama. the characters are well rounded, the suspense palpable, and the gore well done.
lets hope the make more and make them this good.

violence

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 09:01 (A review of High Tension)

unrelenting violence with a surprise gotta-cha sort've ending (even if you guessed, what it was its still rewarding).

these uber-violent movies leave me a little wanting. they seem determined to test ones limits for painful violence being performed on someone...and they succeed in that. when it takes up most of the movie, it makes me long for more story and more dialog. still for what it is, high tension does it well and has some surprises along the way.
