worthy effort

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2009 05:56 (A review of Evil)

first off, despite being advertised as a comedy...this is not a comedy. its a zombie movie in athens and its worth seeing. perhaps not buying.

its amateur fair in some ways, but give credit to a worthy effort with no big mistakes. i hope they make more and continue to develop their skills.

the film makers borrow heavily from other movies. in particular "28 day/weeks later" and interestingly "run lola run". the plot is straight out of 28 days/weeks with a group of survivors struggling to avoid the neo-zombies (the quick paced ones...evil's are quick paced but stumbling idiots...a fun take on it). the filming has elements of run lola run with split screen takes of quick action and running...they even have a similar techno soundtrack for it.

the amateur comes across a couple of time in a minor ways: some scenes are obviously filmed under poor lighting situations. they are quite grainy. there a scene where they are fleeing a group of zombies and then run into another group...the cuts are confused at best. its thankfully a short take. theres a few scenes at the beginning which are on screen far too long (like a close up shot of a man staring for several minutes unmoving). the worst, and its expected, is some bad acting. mostly the actors are ok actually, except the "young girl" charactor: she says she's turning 15....um no...she's clearly in her 20's and worse she can't act. they gave her pigtails to make her look "young" and she's whinny as hell. just short of putting her in a jumpsuit and having her carry a teddy bear...its the stuff of softcore porn....if it was meant to be funny it wasn't. it was just annoying. get a real actress, or a young girl who can't act and it would've been 100 times better. having an older wanna-be actress pretend to be a young girl....aweful.

in the end the movie is mostly a drama (ala 28 days/weeks) with some cheesy gore (i guess this is the "comedy", its fun but not funny). there are some "jokes" along the way but nothing funny and no where near as much attempts at that as the movie is a drama. its a good watch with lots of potential even though it breaks no new ground.

amazing

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2009 03:07 (A review of Logan's Run)

this is probably my favorite movie. admittedly it may not be everyone's, and it may have more to do with growing up with it.

its a great story, beautiful visually, and like nothing else that i know of. its the movie that made me a fan of sci-fi and it sticks in my mind easily.

it should be on everyone's list of "must see" sci-fi movies.

classic

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2009 03:02 (A review of Blade Runner)

simply a classic of the sci-fi genre.

its a mood piece really. a noir cop, in a future setting, hunting replicants who've entered the city illegally.

i personally like the original cut of the movie with the narration. i may be in the minority for this. both the director and the main actors hate that version, as do most fans. i think it adds to the feel of a noir movie, and it does help make the story understandable.

the additional scenes added in the director's cut are good though and there's nothing particularly wrong without the narration.

a must see.

definately wild

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2009 02:57 (A review of Wild Zero)

japanese scum rock, motorcycles, zombies, spaceships, transgendered love, and comedy as well. this movie is all over the place and thats the fun of it. i have to say its not perfect, parts are slow, parts are ridiculous, parts are poorly acted, parts make no sense (as far as i can tell the spaceships have nothing to do with the movie), and the plot is somewhat weak. still its wild fun. if you expect profound you'll be disappointed, but if you just want a fun movie to loose yourself in this is worth every moment.

there are parts that make this seem like a vehicle for guitar wolf (the band) and frankly thats its worse moments. guitar wolf (the man, the singer/guitarist) can't act...and surprisingly bass wolf and drum wolf manage to be even worse. also while i like guitar wolf's music, it sound really "tin" and at times earpeircing. sort've annoying instead of good musical additions.

alien like cow creature

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2009 02:44 (A review of Isolation)

basically a geneticist experiments with cows on a very rural farm. the experiment is to speed the ability for the cows to reproduce. theres mutations that create creatures that grow extremely quickly and thus need to eat/kill quickly. things go very bad from there.

predictable, not terribly scary, a bit gory though, but ultimately its a good horror movie thats worth watching.

my main beef with it (pun intended) is that this movie is more or less the same thing as "black sheep" but no where near as good. this movie is good, black sheep is great.

time becomes a loop

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 3 March 2009 02:27 (A review of Primer)

probably the best time travel movie ever. twists and turns as any good time travel movie should.

all the action happens inside a rental garage space where a group of friends set up, build, and begin to experiment with the technology they've invented. of course things go wrong, and then really wrong...

yes there are a few plot holes but nothing horrible and the twists are unique and interesting. this'll keep you guessing and surprised...possibly a bit confused but not to much.

excellent adventure.

really no such thing

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 3 March 2009 02:23 (A review of No Such Thing)

theres really nothing else like this. its amazing.
its a little, i suppose, like hell boy if it was serious mythology rather than a comic book.

not pretty, not glitzy, not the story you expect it to be. its dark and yet its a story about how two unlikely creatures meet and come to work together to find who they are in the larger world. its also about fame and immortality and the failures of such things.

fascinating

buy it don't rent it. support this kind of film making!!!

pure cheese

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 3 March 2009 02:04 (A review of Seed of Chucky (Widescreen Edition))

its been a long time sense i've seen the original chucky (child's play). i remember being creeped out despite the humor. i know its cheese and it's not meant to be anything more than that but this film swims in the cheese like its a luscious precious thing. its so absurd its nearly difficult to watch at points. the dolls are parodies of themselves. i know that sounds weird but honestly every scar, every hair thats slightly off is calculated so much that its difficult to believe these as the possessed evil dolls that they're meant to be. now they're just the possessed evil dolls that look like they should for the products that follow the movie.

the original chucky got damaged, inflicted pain. these dolls got accessories and cause gore. theres nothing creepy about this movie at all.

despite these gripes, this is a very different movie than the original. in fact the movie is about a movie being made about the dolls which just happen to be the dolls from the original "event" that the docu-drama they're making is about. the story is mostly about the long lost child of chucky and his bride who learns his parents and his heritage is homicidal maniacs.

ok its entertaining and funny. some decent gore. enough but nothing great

zombie

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 3 March 2009 01:53 (A review of The Serpent and the Rainbow)

this is a more serious take on the zombie concept. straight up haitian voodoo zombification.

a drama about a man on the search for the recipe in hopes of bringing it back to an american medical industry. he of course has a hard time getting it and meets some strange characters along the way...and of course a love interest to. ultimately exposed to the process and lost in the surreal world of zombies and rituals. will he survive? you'll guess most of what will happen, despite that its still a good watch.

i first saw this when it came out. i was a kid then and it seemed to envelope me and entrance me. it became one of my favorite films yet i never saw it again until just last year (2008) and i was surprised that it seemed much more like the comedies from the 1980's than it did the overwhelming intense experience i had remembered. it was almost sad to me. it hasn't held up to what it was when it came out. it is still better than most movies, and leaves a good impression.

island retreat

Posted : 15 years, 1 month ago on 3 March 2009 01:42 (A review of The Island of Dr. Moreau)

this version of dr. moreau is probably the one most people knew until the new revision. there was an earlier version, which i've only heard is not that good.

this version is fine for an older movie, dated for today's expectations. with both this and the val kilmer version i had hoped for more and got something which was just ok.

this version is more true to the book and it feels that way. its the kind've direct adaption that you expect from old movies not willing to elaborate or deviate. theres nothing wrong with that, but i had hoped to fill some of the drama instead of just sounding it out. in both movies, but especially in this one theres an opportunity at the beginning of the book to set the stage for whats to come thats entirely missed: the howling of the dogs was creepy as hell to read...it was foreboding and mystical.

this is good sunday viewing.
