amazing

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 08:56 (A review of Intacto)

amazing film about luck and where it leads people.
somewhat violent in a comedic way, but utterly shocking in meaning.

people betting on the luckiness of others and their ability to survive and the games they play to prove it.

a must see.

unique and loved

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 08:51 (A review of Zombie Honeymoon)

there's a lot of new zombie films out in the first 10 years of the 2000's and lets be honest most of them are extreme low budget -just because we can with our digital cameras we did- sort've things. and yes most of them are just bad and barely entertaining.
zombie honeymoon is low budget, yes, but its charming as hell and funny. what would you do if your loved one was suddenly a zombie? not the stumbling corpses like night of the living dead, nor the wildly fast zombies of 28 days/weeks. the "zombie" here is approached like a degenerative disease that turns someone into someone that desires human flesh to eat. and the wife is left to care for infected husband and clean up the messes he makes. its an endearing take on a zombie film.
one of the best zombie flicks out there, despite its clearly low budget filming and acting (it comes off a bit like a british tv production).
well conceived and produced independent film you should support!

aquired taste

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 08:36 (A review of Shivers)

not for everyone.
this film, like much of chronenberg's films is hard to take. its deffinately disturbing and unlike most other films you'll see.

the film is somewhat claustrophobic filmed in what looks like an old highrise apartment complex. the "infectious parasites" look like crawling turds that enter peoples mouths and turn them into zombies with massive sexual desires. um...yeah. you're in for some messed up stuff here, old school style (not intended just to over-shock your system but to be consider as a concept).

well worth seeing, its not pretty but it'll stick with you.

paris is thankfully barely in it.

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 08:20 (A review of House of Wax )

i bought this in a remainder bin. cheap thrills, i hoped and expected nothing more. i forgot paris hilton was the "star" in this movie. i almost threw it away before watching it. i'm glad i didn't.

its gotten a bad reputation for "starring" paris, but if you give it a chance its actually not bad at all. no its not great, but it is good. and you'll be thankful that paris shows up in it very little and she dies! in fact, shes the worse thing about this film. she just can't act. she delivers her lines like she does her life, blissfully ignorant of everything. here she's blissfully ignorant of acting which is a boon for the film. i imagine there's more filmed of her that got cut out. the few moments left in don't ruin the film anymore than some bad acting in a horror film infects almost all horror films. in that way its almost typical except i truly hate paris as a character of a person(let alone her acting). the character she plays in the movie is standard stuff. if it was anyone else's bad acting you wouldn't think twice about it. honestly.

over all the movie is good fun horror, about an "nearly" abandoned small town, the group of teens who stumble into it, and the horrors that await them.

not profound or new, but good none the less.
give it a chance.

barely watchable

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 08:03 (A review of Hell Asylum (Special Edition))

put this dvd on and the first 10 minutes you'll think the dvd itself is messed up. seriously, i thought there was a problem with the dvd until i figured out it was an intentional "error". the plot is about a reality tv show where a group of women are chosen to "survive" a day in an haunted asylum to win. so the dvd glitches out with a harsh electronic noise to simulate jumps from one camera to another or for setting up tracking on cameras etc. it is nearly unwatchable and annoyed me so much that even after i figured out that it was meant to be this way i nearly stopped watching it because i couldn't stand it. i love blair witch, so i can take it when its done well and purposefully...this is just downright appalling.

to make it worse the women characters chosen for the show are parodies of female characters. almost like the parts were intended for the spice girls. i'm not kidding...its laughably bad.

the deaths are fun and things do start getting surprising. there are some creepy characters who of course actually do haunt the hotel (absolutely no surprise there).

honestly, i've seen worse, but this film is barely tolerable. nothing much worth seeing here.

destructive

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 07:43 (A review of After Dark Horrorfest - Frontier(s))

this is a horror in the line of texas chainsaw massacre with the unrelenting gross-out fest of modern horror films.
its more or less texas chainsaw massacre (maybe closer to the new version) with nazi's and good dose of "high tension" (also a french movie). the first part of the film seems like its going to be a political drama about a group of young resistance fighters, riots, newscasts, and all. then they flee to a rural hotel. from there the family that runs the hotel are cannibals/nazi's and things get really twisted.
there are a number of scenes that test your ability to tolerate seeing pain, a few scenes which i found to be truly scary, and some disturbing concepts. some scenes which are actually funny like machine gun toting women and throwback nazi speeches.
the nazi parts are weird, but a fresh concept that's actually interesting not cheesy.
its a good horror movie that'll entertain you. it won't be the best you ever saw but a worthy addition. as a modern horror movie its one that is actually re-watchable where many are senseless shocking violence.

there are a few scenes where people do dumb things that force the movie forward. these seem poorly plotted, but aren't bad enough to ruin the film, just not entirely believable.

oh and the french language can make some of the english subtitle fly by really quickly. this is somewhat difficult at the beginning of the film when the action is quick paced.

fun

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 07:27 (A review of Cemetery Man)

this is a quirky film. its probably not for everyone. a strange off beat humor permeates the film. the kind of understated humor that many people find difficult to understand. its not slapstick, its not one liners, its queer.

this is not a scary or gory horror film. its fun, actually endearing, and yet with zombies and flying screaming heads...

it won't appeal to everyone but give it a chance.

"x"

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 06:51 (A review of Bloodsucking Freaks)

yes it was originally rated "x" and called "The Incredible Torture Show", and bloodsucking freaks deserves both.
its soft core porn of a creepy 70's sort. that's probably its biggest draw. others would definitely consider it a torture to watch this show.
its released by troma and that should tell you everything you need to know. if you don't know: expect lots of nudity, women treated horribly of course, absent or nearly absent plot, awful filming in every respect, acting used as a very very loose term, etc.
granted bloodsucking freaks is a finer example of this. the acting is fair by many of the main characters (lousy by all the rest), the plot isn't half bad if loosely followed, and the film quality and filming is pretty decent quality actually. bloodsucking, however, is purposely degrading towards women and really offers no redeeming qualities to justify promoting this film. if you want porn, rent porn. you can argue that those exploit women and they probably do, this film purposely intends to be exploitative and degrading....why?

wheres the pulse

Posted : 15 years, 2 months ago on 28 February 2009 06:36 (A review of Pulse)

Kairo (aka pulse) is suppose to be scary. its suppose to give you the feeling of eternal isolation. for me, however, it was mostly tedious with some moments that kept me watching. most often it felt like i kept watching hoping it would get better. thats not a good sign and of course it didn't change style at any point. its far from bad but nothing i'd run out to watch again.

i'd suspect some people will find this type of slow psychological horror more appealing, and perhaps i was just not in the mood for it when i saw it. but honestly it nearly bored me.
